COVID-19 brought another epidemic: residential tractors in the United States

The rise of the Rural Lifestyle, powered by the pandemic, is catapulting sales of green space maintenance equipment.

The virus catapulted small tractor sales in the USA.

According to Tractor Supply, one of the main green space maintenance equipment dealers in the country, sales of «residential» tractors grew 31.4% in the third quarter of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.

Other dealers reported average increases of 26.8% between similar periods.

Rural lifestyle

The phenomenon is aligned with the rise of the «Rural Lifestyle», a choice of many Americans who opt for open spaces, instead of travel and large cities.

«COVID-19 continued to have a significant impact on consumer demand, as customers focused on looking after their homes, land and animals», said Tractor Supply.

Weekend Farmers are a dynamic segment of consumers who demand low-power tractors (plus their respective implements), mainly for maintenance tasks of green spaces and leisure activities in the rural environment.

The growth of Rural Lifestyle tractors supports the overall progress of the market for tractors under 40 HP, whose sales increased significantly in both the United States and Canada, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).
