What Is Common Rail?

Common Rail is a fuel injection system used primarily in diesel engines.

It is characterized by storing fuel at very high pressure in a common rail (manifold), from which it is electronically distributed to each injector.

Unlike traditional systems, injection pressure is independent of engine speed, allowing for much more precise fuel metering.

What Does “Common Rail” Mean?

The term Common Rail refers to a “shared rail” or “common manifold.”

The name refers to the fact that all the engine’s injectors share the same high-pressure rail, which acts as a fuel accumulator.

Instead of each injector generating its own pressure, as in older systems, the fuel is pressurized once and stored in the common rail, from where it is electronically distributed to each cylinder.
