The Asian giant continues to gain ground in the global tractor market. One by one, the Indian factories that give life to a global-scale phenomenon.

India has become the global benchmark for the tractor market.

Almost half of the units produced worldwide come from the mega-factories located in the Asian giant. This implies an annual production of around 1 million units.

The powerful Indian industry combines, in the case of tractors, a strong presence of local factories with the massive arrival of major multinationals in the sector, such as John Deere, CNH Industrial, AGCO, and Kubota, to name the most emblematic cases.

Manufacturers

The following is an overview of the main tractor manufacturers present in the country:

Mahindra 👉 Founded in 1945, this Mumbai-based company is the largest global tractor manufacturer, with an annual production of 250,000 units. It has eight plants in India and industrial structures in several countries, including China, South Korea, the United States, and Brazil. Its annual turnover is estimated at $18 billion.
TAFE 👉 Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited was founded in 1960. It produces Massey Ferguson brand tractors for AGCO Corporation. With an annual production of 150,000 tractors, it ranks among the world’s largest tractor manufacturers. In recent years, it acquired the Turkish company IMT Tractor and signed a complementation agreement with the Japanese Iseki to manufacture compact tractors.
Sonalika 👉 International Tractors Limited (ITL) was founded in 1969. The company has grown significantly in the last decade, currently positioning itself as one of the world’s three largest tractor manufacturers. It is present in more than 100 countries. In 2016, the Japanese Yanmar acquired 30% of ITL. It also signed an agreement with Argo Tractors for the provision of Low Power tractors. It is present in Argentina with its Solís line tractors, which it markets in the country through Apache.
Escorts Group 👉 Founded in 1944, it manufactures the tractor brands Farmtrac, Powertrac, and Steeltrac. It also has a wide range of construction equipment. Farmtrac is one of the main tractor brands worldwide, with an annual production of more than 80,000 tractors. It is present in 62 countries, including Argentina, where it operates through the Econovo Group. In 2021, the Japanese Kubota took majority control of Escorts Group by acquiring 53% of its shares.
Captain Tractors 👉 The company was founded in 1994 by the Patel family. It specializes in the manufacture of mini tractors and has been a pioneer in this segment in India. It exports its products to various countries, including Europe.
Preet Tractors 👉 The company based in the Punjab region (India) was founded in 1980 by Hari Singh. It started manufacturing harvesters, mowers, and agricultural implements. Currently, it has a 50,000 m2 plant, where it produces tractors from 35 to 90 HP, harvesters, and engines.
VST 👉 VST Tillers Tractors was created in 1967 in alliance with the Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It is part of the VST Group, founded in 1911 by V. S. Thiruvengadaswamy Mudaliar. The tractor unit focused on the development of compact equipment. With its VST Shakti brand, it leads the local market for mini tractors of the Power Tiller type (walk-behind tractor). It also markets the Fieldtrac brand in European markets.
Force Motors 👉 The Indian multinational, globally recognized for its utility vehicles, is present in the tractor market with the Balwan Tractors product line. It includes versions from 27 to 50 HP.
Indo Farm 👉 Founded in [year not provided], Indo Farm Equipment Ltd. has its headquarters in Himachal Pradesh (India). It manufactures a wide range of agricultural tractors from 20 to 195 HP, as well as harvesters, tillage implements, and construction equipment.
John Deere India 👉 The subsidiary of the American company in the Asian country was founded in 1997. Since then, it has maintained a strong growth process.
New Holland Fiat India 👉 It is the subsidiary of CNH Industrial, based in the Uttar Pradesh region (India). The company has a strong presence in the country, from where it exports its equipment to markets on all five continents.
